What’s Up?

3.5 weeks after Hurricane Irma passed and things are starting to look better around here. We are still loaded with lots of construction debris, damage and home repairs that still need to be done. Our neighborhoods are loaded with fallen trees and limbs that haven’t been removed yet, but we are making major progress. What do you say we meet up on Tuesday for a live cam show?

Hurricane Irma recovery

The recovery  process is well underway following Hurricane Irma. We finally got power back but the work has been intense and ongoing!
The bottom line is we are very lucky we didn’t get hit harder than we did. And after spending weeks on the road, staying with friends and family I realize that the real power in this situation is human power. This time with my family has given me an opportunity to help my parents with some pretty big home projects and I am grateful for that. Thank you for the ongoing love, emails and good wishes. We have to stick together to help Texas, Puerto Rico, Mexico and all of the Islands that have been hit by so many natural disasters in these last few weeks. Follow me on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for more info on my crazy day to day and remember that now matter what you are going through you can work it out.

Back in Florida after Hurricane Irma

The amount of damage to the trees was a surprise. I didn’t know what to expect but seeing so many huge old trees toppled was a shock. This was the effect of a Cat 2 or 3 hurricane, I can’t imagine what would have happened had it made landfall as a Category 5.  My home still has no power but we started the clean up process at my parents house. The weather is so hot that we are working in shifts.
Right now the name of the game is Cut, Clear, Repeat!

Heading south how good it is to see the Florida welcome sign that says “open for business.” All along the way we share the road with truckers moving heavy machinery and supplies into the state to help. Our military and trucks from our North American neighbors –Toronto, Canada are part of our journey. My butt hurts from hours of driving  but how cool it is to see all this movement towards helping each other. I wish I could thank every one of these truck drivers!

Hanging in Birmingham, Alabama

September 12, 2017

Sitting in the now empty hotel dining room watching the news from Birmingham, Alabama. This place was packed with people who evacuated Florida. Many have started their journey back home. When I start getting frustrated about feeling stuck because I want to see what has happened to my home and I want to help, I stop myself and count my blessings instead. We don’t want to add to the problems that already exist in my area by taxing already stretched resources, so I am staying in Alabama for a little while longer. People are dealing with no power, sweltering heat, no water, fuel shortages and loss of food because of no refrigeration. My family and friends are all safe and nothing else matters. For now I am in Alabama taking one day at a time.

Thank you for your kind messages of encouragement and your love. I appreciate your emails and your social media messages. I’m doing good, life is good and you are all an incredible source of positive energy for me. The power you share with me is the power I will be sending back out into the world, so that others who need it can share in it too. Stay tuned for what’s next, the adventures continue.

Love and Gratitude xo Denise

Waiting out Hurricane Irma

Author: Denise Masino
September 10, 2017

Birmingham, Alabama is a beautiful town. The architecture and old buildings constructed in the early and mid 1900’s are amazing to look at. It’s an old steel industry town with railroads, smoke stacks, old bottling companies, factories and lots of history.

I don’t really know much about it and honestly never thought I would find myself here — but here I am. Although the people are friendly and kind, and I want to find a way to enjoy this visit I really can’t. I’m really only here because of Hurricane Irma. I’m currently waiting for her to pass through my world and praying that she leaves the most important parts of my life intact and safe from her wrath.

I need my family and my friends and my neighbors to survive Irma. I can’t imagine it any other way.

September 10, 2017

Dear friends,
I imagine that you are all exhausted by the amount of news coverage you have seen on “Hurricane Irma”.
After weeks of heartbreaking news affecting our fellow citizens in Houston, Texas, here we are, forced to face another catastrophic weather event. My home, family, friends, business and community are located in the Fort Myers and surrounding Florida area which is now bracing for a direct impact from Irma.

An estimated 6.3 million people in Florida got the evacuation order. I was able to evacuate and I am now safely located at a hotel in Alabama, but many of my family, friends and my community are still in Fort Myers.

A driving trip that would ordinarily have taken 11-12 hours to complete took us 20 hours a few days ago. Hotels all over Florida, Georgia and Alabama were completely sold out days ago, making evacuation even harder for anyone trying to get out. I mention this because it’s impossible to understand the complexities of dealing with this kind of unpredictable  weather situation until you are faced with the many decisions and extenuating circumstances that arise.

The purpose of this post is to keep you updated on what is going on with me. My members should not see an interruption in service or updates and I am praying that this storm will move quickly. As you might imagine, I am extremely worried about all of my loved ones and my community. This has been a very emotional time. I am in constant contact with my family and friends who are still in Florida as we prepare to weather the storm. I want to thank you all for being such an incredible part of my life. Thank you for your thoughts and your prayers. I am seeing your emails and your social media messages and I love you all. Thank you for being my people. You are all a great part of my story and I couldn’t imagine it any other way.

Please stay with us. I will keep you posted as the next day progresses.
With Love and heartfelt gratitude Denise
