I spent a week in New York City visiting many of the places where I grew up. This trip was for a documentary project that I am shooting and it also included a brief, but wonderful family reunion. One of my stops was the 9/11 memorial. This was my first time at ground zero, and although the new twin towers are well on their way to being completed, the area is still under heavy construction. I found the site both beautiful and sad, the fountains that represent the footprint of the original twin towers surreal. I wrestled with the realization that almost 3,000 people perished on that fateful day. New York City wasn’t the only place hit on 9/11/2001, but every name of every victim was represented on those fountains. It’s imperative that we honor the heroes and their families and that we never forget. I was reminded that New York City represents the World Financial Center and I thought about the huge responsibility that we have in that regard, and I was saddened again by the irresponsible manner with which so many have handled their business dealings on Wall Street. We must do better.
