Erykah BaduErykah Badu at the House of Blues
I had the pleasure of spending the final moments of 2009 at the House of Blues on Sunset in Los Angeles listening to the sultry, soulful, jazzy, bluesy rap sound of Erykah Badu. She opened the show wearing a tight black trench coat and a top hat and slowly peeled away the layers of her outfit in the same fashion that she peeled away the layers of our stress. It was a hectic day that started with a 4 am wake-up, a 4:30 am taxi ride to the airport followed by a 2 hour delay and a 15 minute run through the Houston airport in a desperate attempt to make our connecting flight back to LA so that we could make our New Year’s Eve plans at the House of Blues. Exhausted, we arrived in LA on time. A short catnap later I was slipping into my champagne colored mini-dress and on cruising down Sunset boulevard. Within 40 minutes of the start of the show, Erykah removed her top hat and the second layer of her modest outfit and was singing and grooving in a basic t-shirt, jeans and her signature turbin. She was smooth like a snake, silky like a cat and relaxed as though she had just come out of a hot shower and had put her hair up in a towel. Everything about her was strong and an absolute pleasure to behold.  If you ever get the opportunity, see her.  xoxo Denise
